I hate calling tech support…I’m not really tech savvy

But I now can appreciate when people used to call my company and say, sounding relieved when I answered, “You’re an American !”

I used to privately think it was rude, because I remembered a colleague joking about how when he answered, with a slight Spanish accent, a customer told him, “I want someone who speaks English !” I did hear him say, “I’m sorry-I thought I was speaking English !” The client hung up. He shrugged and asked us, “Friends, was I accidentally speaking Spanish ?”

But whoever I spoke to this evening was not understanding me, and I kept having to ask her to repeat what she was saying. It may or may not have been a language issue, but it was frustrating and as politely as I could manage, I finally told her it wasn’t time a good and I’d call back. I’m going to try again tomorrow, earlier in the day.

I have sometimes had that problem calling customer service, due to different accents in different parts of the US.

And having grown up in the NYC area at a time when I constantly heard various accents from different immigrant groups, I like to think that this would not be a big problem for me.

But, then there was the time, back in college, when I had a blind date with someone with a thick Boston (actually Dorchester) accent, and I made a great impression by saying, "what?" after everything she said....
@DrWatson Excuse me! It's DAWchestah thank you very much. There's no "ahh" in that word. My hometown.

@fernie2 Ah, as I now live in the Midwest, it's been years since I've heard those dulcet tones!
@fernie2 One of my friends from college was from Dorchester, MA. She took us to visit her home one week that we had off, and we really enjoyed it. And we loved her accent. 😊
@DrWatson Last time I went to “Nawlins” it occurred to me that if I can understand some of my relatives I should be okay with most accents.
@bijouxbroussard It was a wonderful place to grow up. Now, not so much.
@fernie2 Sadly the case many places, now. 🙁
