Eloise, the cat from a few doors away, doesn't like anyone human shaped. I'm not even sure if she like her owner except for the food he gives her. She is one of those grumpy, snarly old cats who gives you one of her hard looks as if to say, "don't you dare come near me".
I have never heard her purring, only growling, hissing and spitting. It must be in her nature. My neighbour Ben said he's had her since she was a kitten so it isn't because she has been treated meanly, he dotes on her. Eloise isn't fond of his wife but tolerates her, because when Ben isn't there, that's where the food comes from. The fact that Ben and his wife like to go on holiday once a year has been met with fear by family and friends at the thought of feeding and keeping an eye on her, but his sister comes to the rescue. Even a big bag of Dreamies hasn't made her friendly towards me.

No, my cat is actually very sweet and gentle, but VERY afraid of strangers. It takes him a year, or sometimes two, to feel comfortable enough with specific people to come out from under the bed when a stranger is here.
