By the original definition, we're not animals. However the definition has come to change to also include humans, so nowadays Animals is simply defined as all multi-celled beings that aren't plants.
It's an idea forced on us by evolutionistic thinking, and most often "humans are animals"
is simply a phrase to use to taunt religious people. In no circumstance is it useful other than in those scenarios.

@MartinTheFirst Martin I do not think that the phrase was invented to taunt religious people. It's a scientific fact that has nothing to do with religion.
