So the countdown begins.

Seven days till I pick up Smudge's kitten from the shelter. It'll be as young as I can get, as to bring out some maternal instinct.
It's kind of a gamble. I hope they'll become fast friends and playmates; I can't bear Smudges crying and howling since her friend was taken from her. I can't be her cat friend. Oh well. Here goes.

Kitten is a good choice. They might not be so ready to accept another adult cat, but most cats do accept kittens.

Mine did. When I brought him home, he tried nursing off her, but she was having no part of that. So he tried sucking her toes, she allowed that. Four years later, he still does it.

@Serenitree Smudge is very licky with kittens. She groomed her little friend to sleep most nights. I hope for the same with the newcomer.

@Cavedweller I'm sure she will be...grooming each other is instinct....grooming kittens, even more so.

@Serenitree And it'll definitely be a little girl. The less threatening the better.

@Cavedweller 😅 How many cats have you had?
Cavedweller · 46-50, F
@Serenitree In my entire life? Six. All passed away now.

@Cavedweller Have you ever introduced a kitten to an adult cat before?

I ask, because, in the first while, most cats take each other's measure, before trusting. Kittens often hiss and puff up their fur to look fierce when first meeting another cat. Adults tend to view any newcomer as an interloper. Sometimes that lasts only minutes, but I've seen it last hours.

It usually works out great when introducing a kitten to an adult. Two adults, on the other hand, can be troublesome. I have one cat who just wanted to be friends with my daughter's cat, but my daughter has lived here for a year and a half and her cat still won't accept mine. Now he just antagonizes her. Deliberately.

@Serenitree I introduced Smudge to a much older male cat several years ago. She just wanted to play and fool around with him. All the time. He didn't speak to us for days.
But he grew to love her. Taught her secret cat business.

@Cavedweller Oh, good. Then you know what to expect.

Talking about secret cat stuff, I read a book a long time ago, by Paul Gallico called Abandoned. It's a children's story, but it isn't a childish book. It is a 300 page book and a great read.

@Serenitree I'll check it out on advisement.

@Cavedweller It's available as an ebook if that's interests you.

@Serenitree That does interest me.
