I really want to get a dog, but I see how their passing affects people, and not sure I want to go through that. Is it worth it?

if you do get a dog, get a rescue

@Matt85 Absolutely, a rescue is the way to go. We have done that, occasionally a pet has found us, I mean they were abandoned on the street and we have been more than blessed, many times over.
