Welp, found a lost dog

I just wanted to get high and watch a movie tonight, but when I took my dog out for her midnight bathroom break, this guy showed up.

I thought I'd let them run around for a while thinking his owner was around the corner or something, but after a while nobody showed up. He didn't have a name tag so there was no one I could call. I tried listening to see if anyone was calling, and then I tried letting him loose to see if he'd walk back home, but no luck there. I also tried doing a lap around the apartment complex with him, but got no results there either.

By this point it was a quarter past 1 in the morning and I didn't have much hope of reuniting him with his owner(s), so now he's home with me. Even fed him and gave him water.

Young, sweet, energetic, loves back scratches and licking my face. He's clearly a well-loved dog. The downside is that he hasn't been neutered so I've been having to play cockblocker all night. It's really fcking annoying trying to settle down two energetic dogs when it's 2 in the morning and you're tired from work. Luckily, I spoil my dog so much that I have enough treats and toys to keep the both of them occupied. It's really helped a lot. They're starting to get along quite well.

As much as I'd love to keep him, I'm pretty sure there's someone out there looking for him. Tomorrow morning I'm going to start making some phone calls and digging around online to see if I can send this big ole pupper home. It's a shame because I already love him and he seems to be really happy here. We'll see how things go. I'm just hoping we can all sleep in peace tonight. They're both still kinda hyper.

Anybody else been in this situation? Can someone point me in the right direction here?

I've been in the situation several times, and how I ended up finding the dog (or cat's) owner has varied. With one dog, I called all the local shelters and left my phone number and a description of her, and put a notice in the newspaper.

I hope you'll let us know what happens.

@Piper I just got in touch with the local shelter. Hopefully something comes up. Took him to the vet to scan for a chip, but he doesn't have one. He's a good boy, so I'm hoping I can reunite him with his family soon

@TinyViolins Surely if he has loving, caring 'owners', they'll be calling all the places he might be. I had the dog I called Blue for well over a month, before I got a call from her person.

(Sorry I didn't see your reply sooner. )

@Piper I've posted his face to a bunch of different websites, and searched as many lost dog listings as I could. Still got nothing, but it's only been a day and a half.

I like him, but I'm not sure how long I can keep him. My dog likes to play rough, but since he's bigger and stronger than her, she's already gotten hurt twice. It's a lot to worry about when you're not home.

@TinyViolins If he's already hurt your dog twice in this short amount of time, I sure do understand your worry. I figure you'd never just take the lost dog to a shelter, like many people would.
Tough situation. Is it feasible to separate the dogs somehow, when you're not home?

@Piper I had the same line of thinking. I build a "fort" out of some boxes and chairs that would be small enough for her but not for him, just in case she needed to get away. They both seemed happy and healthy when I got home from work today, so I'm guessing it wasn't necessary.

I think he's just excited and doesn't know his own strength because of how young he is. My dog is fairly vocal anyway, so she's likely to warn him if he gets too rough. He's a sweet dog. Just a little too energetic. I've been letting run around a few times a day, so I think that also helps
