Do you think a kitty prefers an elevated water dish?

My kitty keeps knocking over his water. I thought it was to get my attention only, but I'm thinking I was wrong about that for various reasons:

1) He seems to stop attempting to knock it down when I immediately get him fresh water after he attempts it (putting his paw in the water to knock it over).

2) He knocked it over this morning very early (while I was still sleeping in the other room). I heard it, and I got up to clean it. As I was cleaning it up, he was trying to drink the same water that spilled from the table it spilled on.

3) When he does attempt to knock it over (while I'm awake) he stops if I hold the water at a slant. That makes me wonder if it's related to whisker fatigue as it's a small circumference.

After I got him his fresh water this morning, he still attempted to knock my water down. I think that's due to him wanting something to eat though.

Another thing --- I've noticed he doesn't knock it down near as much when I'm not here vs if I'm at home.

I'm not sure if it's about the freshness of the water, the height (he does sneeze or seem to get water in his nose sometimes from drinking it at an a 7" height --- this REALLY bothers him), or if he's trying to get my attention.

Honestly, I don't know what causes him to get water in his nose sometimes.
My cat loves to play in water, and he is a very big cat so I have to use heavy water dishes so he can't tip them over but still enjoy his playtime.

Try get another big heavy water bowl. Cats will instinctively avoid drinking from the closest source of water. So another bowl should do it. Cats do like to play with the water as well so you may still find him tripping the first bowl and put in his paws to look for fish. Let him play with it just get a plastic Tray under so it won't damage the floors or tables.

Do you keep his food dish next to the water? Cats don’t like that, so it’s best if their water is further away, or even in another room. My cat used to knock stuff into his water and try knocking it over until I moved the location.

@lulove I don't.

I do remember that about him when I used to do that... That might explain why he chooses the table. Thanks.

My cat preferred an elevated water bowl. She had a bowl of water on the floor that I changed daily by her food bowl but she always drank from the fishbowl or a water pitcher on the table.
How old is Kitty?
Many really do like it to be fresh,
Like really fresh maybe twice a day it should be hard to knock over there’s a lot of pet bowls that are of a wide base and yes he shouldn’t have to touch anything with his whiskers to get to the water So a big wide bowl, that is heavy enough to be hard to tip over but it could be communicating something sometimes cats just want to be entertained!

I have also known cats that like playing with water so maybe at that too
Cats can’t see still water in their dish, they can smell it and they accidentally poke their noses in it when they try to drink so cats will poke at the water with their paw to make sure it’s their and they see the water move.
It’s not uncommon for a frustrated kitty to knock over the water, get a dish that’s has a wide bottom that can’t be knocked over, don’t use a regular bowl

Have you ever heard the phrase

" Dogs have owners... Cats have staff." ?? ..LOL 🤣...

Cats will move their water before drinking it. So you need a bowl that doesn't move, elevated or not

Get a fountain.
It triggeres their natural response to drink water.

@CheshireAzur He's scared of it. He had the desire to drink water due to Hyperthyroidism. He drinks more water than the average cat... lots more. But, he's tipping over his water lately. I'm thinking it's whisker fatigue possibly.
7" height !
That's kinda high for a cat water bowl .
I have two , one is ceramic 1"high , the other is about 1and a half inches tall.

I refill with fresh water every day, or when the water level gets below half .

It honestly sounds too tall a bowl for a cat to comfortably drink out of .

Edit: you gotta remember that cars naturally drink 🍻 ht of puddles and streams ...a high bowl in unatural.

@OogieBoogie Yeah. It never bothered him growing up. It's all he wanted. Now he's 15-16 yrs old, and he seems to be having problems with various options. I have multiple sources of water for him to drink from. He chooses the cup on the table as usual. It's the 7" source. He'll take a few sips from the bowl on the floor. It measures almost 2". He still wants water on the table from his cup though.
@perceptivei I dunno then. Maybe hes learnt to spill water for attention ?

@OogieBoogie I think that's part of it but not everything. Not 100% sure...
