I rescued/stole my last dog from a home were it was being treated horribly. It turned out to be the best dog I ever had and I think that is partly because he knew I spared him from a hard knock life. This is probably bad but I'm hoping your cat grows up big and strong and it scratches the eyes out of the guy that kicked it. Cheers!
