Our ❤️❤️❤️❤️ are broken

We have 2 littermate dogs. They are 15 years old. We just had one of them pass away today. He was my daughter's dog. He was sweet, silly, and had so much energy. He ended up with colon cancer 5 months ago. But XRays recently showed that the cancer was spreading even if he wasn't showing signs of it. We made a decision to put him to sleep while he still acted like himself and was happy.
It broke all of our hearts.
I'm afraid losing him is going to kill his brother. I'm afraid he is going to grieve himself to death. Could this truly be a possibility? We can't go through this another time. Not rght now.

Sorry to hear that. I had to put my husky down on Friday. He would have been 13 in June

@UnderLockDown I know. He's getting spoiled which is exactly what he deserves.

I'm sorry for your loss, and yes, dogs can grieve themselves to death. Give him some extra time and love and maybe he'll better deal with the loss.

He knows his friend is gone but dogs have no concept of how much time has passed, so, to him, his friend being gone for one minute, is the same as if he were gone for a month. He feels his absence but doesn't really realize the length of time. He will eventually adjust and should be fine. You are doing the right thing by giving him extra attention and keeping his mind occupied.

Kit, I’m terribly sorry to hear about your loss 😔Unfortunately life is short and death is inevitably part of it. Please try to stay strong especially for his brother, include him in your daily routine wherever possible. Don’t allow him to feel isolated or neglected, so making sure he has company is critical.

@MichaelZ We are all trying our best. He slept on the couch with my daughter the first week. We all open our bedroom doors so he can choose which room he wants to sleep in..I leave the TV on when I leave the house so he has some noise. And I think my 4 cats who have joined him on the couch a few times might help a little

Its very heart breaking to lose a pet. I had one white Shitzu who passed away at the age of 13....😥
Klt3sHottie · 46-50, F
@scorpio611 It's not easy. But I know there is a doggy heaven and he's reunited with my other fur baby, Tango the Tabby Cat.

We've made is brother an inside dog. He won't go outside by himself. But the extra attention is doing a lot for him. We go for car rides. We go for walks. And he is not Al be in the house for very long. So I think he's going to be ok
