I think classes help them learn who, when and how to be protective. German shepherds are naturally territorial and protective, so one of the greatest priorities is making sure they don’t become aggressive.

Regardless if you do basic obedience or guard and protection, now is when you want it in puppy class for socialization.
I've had 2 shepherd husky mixes, both family dogs with basic obedience and both alerted with a deep loud warning bark naturally to strangers coming near or into the home.

Yes definitely. More importantly obedience training. Shepherds can be out of control without it when they get older. Aggressive towards other animals and even children. Destructive. Crazy is another word for it! I have two female siblings they are pretty good but just simply letting them out is absolute chaos. They fight over who gets out first. I wish I had spent the money on obedience training.

Classes can help, and she will learn obedience, but know ahead of time that some dogs are too sweet to be guard dogs.
On the other side of it, I have seen a very sweet dog act protectively when his person felt threatened. It was very out of place for him too, he was big dopey lovable dog that had never shown aggression. One time his Lady had allowed a salesman into the house, after a short time his Lady started feeling fearful and he walked up to the salesman and bared his teeth, uttering a very scary growl.😈 He was a very large dog too!😆 Needless to say, his Lady was safe, happy, and very proud.

I think that would be a good idea for discipline training. Had one at the car lot where I worked and he was very serious about his guard job but during the daytime he was very sweet.

I have found that a good dog will instinctively bark and protect its family.
Guard dog training in the wrong hands can be a liability.

Thanks you all for your answers im gonna start looking for classes asap
no they will do it on there own.. i have a shepherd they are smart if you dont give them something to do they will find something to do on there own and it might not be nice. so its work with them on habits or tricks for the first two years and then its auto pilot . very pleased with mine.
@Kobrassky got him as a puppy and had to carry him up and down the stair case. so very young . and he is a farm dog and likes goats chickens cows horses and does not bark or chase any. the dog will follow your lead if someone is around and you are not scared he will not be . they want to follow your lead so take some time and it will be ok. if you are not there then crate them for the first year and then you can stop that also. the crate just stops them from doing something on impulse like eating the chair. . you will like this in the long run .. who said money can not buy you happiness. my dog is now to the point i can sit him on the porch and walk two blocks to the post office and when i get back he is waiting. yours can to. if you teach it . every day

Classes are good because your shepherd will learn when to be and not be protective.

I like German Shepherds! I think she might protect your house anyway. 😊

Training can’t hurt. But their protective instinct is already pretty strong .
