If you buy from a breeder, make sure you get a certificate of health and have it vetted first thing. You run the risk of inbreeding if it isn’t a reputable breeder and pure breeds are prone to more health issues.
Mutts tend to be healthier. At least that’s been my experience. And they are just amazingly precious souls.
My Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (front) was purchased from a breeder. My Pomeranian mix (rear) was adopted from a rescue agency after SPCA confiscated her ( along with about 50 other dogs) from a hoarder.
I'd adopt from a shelter. I used to work in one and one of my responsibilities was euthanasia. So I just wouldn't feel right going through a breeder. There are also rescues that are breed specific.
You don’t buy pets. All dogs need a good loving home regardless of where they come from but if you have the money to adopt from a reputable breeder, there’s nothing wrong with that either.
Too many dogs and cats are given up for adoption and do not get adopted. They are then fed and cared for while humans are suffering from hunger and all due to idiots that think they can raise and care for a cute little puppy or kitten then tire of it or do not have the intelligence to do so. I trapped twenty seven feral cats in my backyard in one summer that people had just let go wild. Leash laws for cats need to be enforced as "ABC reports researchers estimate cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species, including 40 bird species. When combining the introduction of rodents, “cats are major agents of extinction, collectively being listed as casual factors in 44 percent of modern bird, mammal and reptile species extinctions,” Doherty wrote, according to ABC." Dogs that are given up for adoption are often pit bulls and many people think and will say that they only get dangerous die to the way they are raised which has proven to be a total misconception as those dogs that often seem docile have killed many children, other pets and injured the same and adults too with out warning. Best that animals turned in for adoption be euthanized immediately and the money that would have been spent caring for them donated to helping people that need it.
@Pinkstarburst If they had been euthanized before you met them then it would have been impossible to miss them. As far as animals "dangerous populations are a people issue…not animal issue" you are totally wrong about that. Two stray cats not neutered can reproduce exponentially, breeding pit bulls is a also an animal issue as they can turn mean no matter how they are raised. Try looking at coyotes, rats and other vermin they are not a people issue they will reproduce no matter how many we seem to kill. Do you let your cats loose outdoors? Many people do and they are not neutered and when they get outdoors they are an "animal issue".
I bought from a legitimate high quality breeder. Expensive but I'm happy I did. I support rescue adoptions but this time around I went in a different direction.
@AthrillatheHunt Yeah......I hear ya! I wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything. I got Daisy from the pound because I could never afford a golden retriever with papers! Daisy is a trip. She is the most undoglike dog, I have ever seen. She acts more like a cat. She completely ignores me. She can't leash at all. Calling her is pointless. She's been with me eight years and she's fast approaching D day. It's going to tear me up.
