Is success for a person only as simple as scaring them?

So you have someone moping around unable to get out of a rut and nothing they or others try to do seems to work. Is it solely because they aren't scared enough? Is hope holding such people back?

They're comfortable. They learn to accept things over time and then don't change because they get too comfortable.
