I Am An Introvert

I am a cashier. I got my annual review at work yesterday and I was told I have to be friendly and smile more for my customers. I do plenty of that, it's just that because I'm so quiet, I only greet, ask how they are, and make sure they found everything ok. Then I tell them to have a nice day, all with a smile and positive attitude. What the review actually means, in my opinion, is that I need to strike a conversation like the rest of the cashiers. I suck at those! I wanted to laugh so hard the moment I heard this part of my review! Somehow I kept a straight face.

Strike a conversation? When you got a line-up? I don't get it. That's not even efficient. What kind of store is it? If you want to make a conversation, maybe you can congratulate the customer for the choice they have made. For example, "That's a beautiful item, and the price is very low". I am an introvert too and I have been a cashier for many years. I was suffering because I was supposed to make the customer use the company credit card or the rewards card. It was embarassing.

Yeah, I have to sell the company card to customers, as well. Cashiers have to converse about anything. The goal is to make the customer feel comfortable like a "guest" and have them leave with a positive impression of the company's store. I don't think that is necessary all the time as long as I am polite to them and do my job fast and efficiently.
