Old joke.
Long before cellphones and PCs were a thing, a city fella was driving through rural areas of New England, searching for a place that was selling family heirlooms.
He got lost. At last, he saw an elderly man on a tractor, plowing. He got out of his car, climbed the rail fence and approached the man on the tractor, asking him for help in finding the place.
The man was courteous and freely offered a long set of complicated instructions. The city guy took notes and then returned to his car with more confidence.
He drove for almost an hour, when he realized that he was looking at the same fence, field and tractor man.
Annoyed, he climbed the fence again, hailed the tractor driver and angrily yelled, “Your directions just made me drive an hour and wind up right back here! Why did you do that?”
Unruffled, the old man said, “It’s kinda hard to find, that place you’re trying to get to. I wanted to make sure you could follow simple directions first.”
