When I was a child and learning about slavery in the USA…

My child mind comprended it literally as an Underground Railroad. Like where does the smoke go? I imagined slaves tunneling out of the south and then building a train to get the other slaves to escape. 😭 why am I stupid?

I thought that too. Except I thought there were actually a bunch of tunnels everywhere instead of it being like a network of safe houses and stuff.
