could have waited for backup before engaging
not sure what policy is but he didn't know if it was the driver in the vehicle that evaded him.
he did batter the cop with the door and could have potentially caused serious injuries
his vehicle probably should have been placed to prevent him backing up.
shouldn't have fired
shouldn't have fire at a moving vehicle as he was not a threat to the public
should have been fired...may not get criminal charges - but he should probably be a security guard from n ow on.

Good, they fired him. When will the police learn that laws are not in place so they can arrest criminals, laws are in place to protect us from them, the Government.
Not to mention that opening the car door without cause is an illegal search.

@candycane From what I hear, the car may not even be the one the officer thought it was. But regardless "Get out of the car" isn't anywhere near appropriate procedure, kid probably thought he was getting carjacked
