I Believe Good Manners Is Not Old Fashioned

I must confess I am amazed at the lack of teaching of good manners these days to young people. I was on a crowded bus with many teen schoolchildren occupying the seats when a real old lady got on. Not one of the kids budged to give up their seat for the frail old lady who was left standing till an older man gave up his seat. I don't blame the kids too much as it appears they have never been told a few manners by their parents or anyone else. Perhaps that should be on the curriculum of our politically correct schools

Our society has become more informal over time, almost "dumbed down".

@chrisCA Nothing wrong with informality, I prefer it. I wouldn't say it equates to dumbing down though. Blind formality is dumb in my opinion.

@Sharon Blind formality?
Sharon · F
@chrisCA Formality without any practical reason, purely for the sake of formality.

@Sharon Such as dressing for dinner?
Sharon · F
@chrisCA That's one example. Men standing when a woman (but not a man) joins or leaves the table is another.

@Sharon Interesting. I always stand when someone is being introduced at my table, or if I am sitting.

@chrisCA I would too when first being introduced but I was referring to the sexist custom of men (not women) standing whenever a woman (but not a man) leaves or joins the table.
