Rather depends on whether you're male or female and which country you're in.
Much of the world was ruled by the Catholic Church at that time with all sorts of expectations for the populace, regardless of social status or piety level.
Meaning you could be married young and beheaded/burned at the stake etc. and very little in the way of burden of proof required.
Especially for women.
