I Am Different

And that's ok.

Being part black in origin, to a white mum and family, that does make you more than stand out. But that's ok. Being in the foreground rather than the background. I always look like the 'friend' of the family rather than the daughter.

Mum's side of the family, on her dad's side, is Italian and we were brought up with a lot of Italian cuisine.

Which is at odds with other black children and families that have more of an African or Jamaican slant to their diets. Stuff that they consider staple to the diets but completely alien to me!

I'd get looks of 'How come you don't know this stuff, girl?' from the parents.

It is what it is. Being stereotyped as a black woman and having that cultural background when I really haven't. Sometimes I feel that I am missing out on something but, I think, the grass is always greener as they say. This is me, for worse or better. As I age I will grow and, hopefully, learn.

Hence the reason that I am different.

So long as your family loves you, I think that's all that really matters. We're all one big family, and everyone has their individual culture.
