Your definition of a hero.

Hero.

We hear or read this word and images come to mind. Mostly of people though depending on the context a type of food can appear. A hero sandwich is also knows as a submarine sandwich or sub, a hoagie, or Po' Boy distinguished for its large size bread sliced and filled with a variety of ingredients. Based on conversations I have had I have found a classic hero sandwich has Italian meats, provolone cheese, lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. Those were commonly agreed upon ingredients but naturally numerous variations exist.

A hero in the form of a person is the reason for this posting.

In your opinion what makes a person a hero? Are there standards by which other heroes should be measured? If so what are those standards?
Is there a person in your life, past or present, who is a hero?

In your response/answer I ask for no photos, memes, or gifs. Your words of a civil tone will suffice.

Thank you.

I recall an interesting discussion in college days where the prof went in depth about how in original terms a hero was just a highly effective soldier. An efficient killer on the battlefield and to try to expect more of them was a mistake. You didn't expect them to be good, moral, artistic or anything other than effective in war. Which is an interesting position to take, i think.
@dirge I find that to be a most interesting angle. Thank you for sharing it.
