Ho Ho Ho, it’s Faerie Friday! And I tried to find some festive, holiday fae.
Nisse/Tomte (Scandinavia): Small, bearded figures associated with the winter solstice, protecting farms and sometimes bringing gifts (or causing trouble) if disrespected, often linked to St. Nicholas.
Yule Lads (Iceland): Thirteen mischievous trolls who visit in the days leading up to Christmas, leaving gifts for good children and rotten potatoes for bad ones.
Befana (Italy): An old woman on a broomstick who brings gifts (or onions if they’ve been bad) to children on Epiphany (Jan 6th), a figure with pre-Christian roots. I wasn’t sure about this one because I didn’t see a source that refers to her as a fae, but she kept appearing on lists of Christmas associated faeries. 🤷♀
And let’s not forget the Christmas icon himself, who was once described in Clement Moore’s famous poem as “a right jolly old elf.”
