Getting burned to a crisp is not necessary but sunlight causes the body to make vitamin D and other things. it is healthy for us. Wife is vitamin D deficient; we took a trip to Texas for two weeks and her vitamin D levels were almost back up to normal when she saw the doc when we got home.
