The empty upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket was due to strike the Moon near the Einstein crater at a speed of about 5,400mph (8,700km/h) on Wednesday.

It could be days or even weeks before the full picture of what happened and what we can learn from it is known - but for planetary geologists, this accidental collision is a scientific gift."

We're calling this massive mistake a scientific gift? Okeydoke. That's a new one. Way to promote a weird silver lining, just hours after a reckless company literally damaged THE MOON.

Well, NASA crashed a probe at high speed into the moon, I think it was last year, on purpose for research trying to detect water ice. It happens pretty regularly to the moon

The BBC isn't calling it that. The geologists are.

The News was only repeating the scientists' "gift" claim but I agree the point about more man-made junk on the Moon.

Whether it could be condemned as damage considering the scrap rocket stage had done nothing that millions of years of meteor strikes have not done, is another matter; but at least those are natural objects. Not some millionaire's discarded scrap metal, albeit accidental.

I suppose the rocket was meant either eventually to drift further way into Space, or to fall back to Earth, being destroyed as it passes through the atmosphere; but it does highlight just how increasingly wasteful the use of Space is becoming. Not just research, but shallow commerce too.

Though Musk could not care less.

You know I find it very odd that supposedly the US landed Astro naughts on the moon in the early 1960's and the latest moon exploration was to send a space craft around the moon in a full circle for the first time ever. And when I saw the interview of the head of NASA and he was asked when will you send a mission to land on the moon next? His reply was "Oh We Do Not Have That Technology Yet"!

Let that sink in for a minute supposedly we had it back in 1962 when we landed on the moon, where the heck did, they lose that technology at, Disneyland????

@WillaKissing There are lots of other clues too. This seems like one of the bigger conspiracy theories that people really want to bash, and tell you you’re crazy for thinking. Maybe because of the emotional impact the event had on them at the time. But I’m with you.

@Akimbo75 In 1962 they had lead paint and no car seats or even coated windshields or padded dashes in cars, but they landed on the moon, and in 2026 we do not have that technology yet. Shoot time travel back A Hole. LOL
