Marilyn Monroe, 5 August 1962
I made a joking post this morning about wearing skirts on windy days. That got me thinking about Marilyn Monroe and I realized that today is the anniversary of her death, which happened in 1962. She was such an amazing woman, strong and fragile all at once. Beautiful, of course, but with an underappreciated intellect as well. I've shared a few famous poems about her in the past, including one very moving one about here death. But I just learned that she wrote poetry herself. Here are a few lines from one of her own poems:
Its good they told me what
the moon was when I was a child
It's better they told me as a child what it was
for I could not understand it now
There is a lot to think about in those lines. The untouchable beauty of the moon. The way we see things as children compared to as adult. The impersonal "they" who teach us as children but talk at us as adults. Maybe it is the later context of her life and death that makes it so meaningful.
Rest in Peace.
