Global Volume: Approximately 90% of all traded goods globally move by sea. Total annual seaborne trade volume has reached roughly 13 billion tons.
1 ton displaces
A fully loaded large cargo ship displaces an amount of water that equals its total weight, typically ranging from 50,000 to over 200,000 tonnes (or cubic meters) of water.

@NudasPriest helpful is there a way to also account for compression from cargo being flown over the ocean simultaneously?
@exchrist That was a joke. 😉

@NudasPriest okay good one! Unfortunately I’m doing a bunch of things at the moment I chuckled though.

The total displacement of all ships in the entire world on the oceans at the same time has a total sea level rise effect of about 6 microns, or about 6% the width of a human hair. Glacial melt has significantly more of an effect.

Weight and volume: A floating ship displaces a weight of water equal to its own total weight (including cargo).
Global total: Estimates place the combined weight of all commercial, military, and private vessels on Earth at roughly 2 billion tons

Planes in the air increase the air pressure, which compresses the water. 🤓
@exchrist It's my terribly scientific hypothesis.

@NudasPriest so if we shift shipping to by air the oceans will appear to be lower with the same amount of water.
@exchrist Given the way humanity is going, it's only fair that the oceans can be denser too.
