They must have evolved slowly from predecessor genusses (geni?); but a very long time after life generally started to form.
You'd need consult works on palaeontology to find what has been worked out so far.

Dinosaurs evolved from reptiles, the latter of which inhabited water and later evolved to the dry land during the period that existed about 50 million years prior to the dinosaur era. Walking dinosaurs therefore, are what evolved from reptiles that transitioned from water to land.
Descendants of that early reptile era are still alive today, which is the modern day crocodile.
The same thing applies to birds.
Modern birds of all species are direct descendants of avian dinosaurs which survived after the mass extinction of all land-walking dinosaurs (T-rex). This means that "dinosaurs" are still alive today in the form of decedents of reptiles (crocodiles) and avian dinosaurs (all birds).
