So there is talk that after billions of years, the sun will die and it will grow so large it will grow into the Earth.

So let's say humans live that long, and they build subterranean tunnels. Would that event of the Sun destroy Earth? If it doesn't destroy Earth, could humans survive such an event by living in subterranean tunnels?

Which part of the sun enveloping the earth are you having a problem understanding?

@Convivial care to expand on that? I mean, i get it. But. Explain it please.

@Umile the thinking is, and I'm no expert so this is probably off in some respects, as the sun runs down on energy, the gravitational force weakens allowing it to expand into what's known as a red giant.
Some believe it will expand out so it's surface will cover the earth..i don't care how deep your tunnels are at that point... You're screwed 😜
