Tumbleweed And this little galaxy is just one of billions out there. We are constantly finding out the cosmos is bigger than we thought before. Our galaxy, the milky way galaxy, is thought to be around 100,000 light years across. As fast as light moves, 186,000 miles per SECOND, it would take a beam of light 100,000 years to cross our galaxy. It's unbelievable how small this little planet is in all of the cosmos. It's just ridiculous to think we earthlings are the only intelligent life anywhere out there.
