When I was at boarding school the dormitory buildings were really old design and had open front dorms with large balconies and my bed was on the balcony . If it rained there was a big canvas curtain that rolled down so you stayed dry . They had log weights in them to hold them down in windy weather and we used to push our beds against them jamming them between the walls of the balcony and the bed to stop them blowing out and banging against the wall keeping everyone awake at night . If it rained you had to make sure you left nothing on the floor as you woke up in the morning to a wet floor where the rain ran down the outside of the canvas blind .

Yes, as a kid but terrace is much better. Balconies are usually too small.
