According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), international maritime borders generally extend up to 200 nautical miles from a country's coastline, defining an area known as the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), where a coastal nation has sovereign rights over resources like fish and minerals. The first 12 nautical miles from the coastline is where a nation has full sovereignty.

No, it doesn't, and no, it doesn't.
It's the Indian Ocean for a reason. There is no American or Canadian Ocean.
Why does the Gulf of Mexico belong to Mexico? 🤣

For 12 miles out. They own it. But after that it's international waters.
The middle of the Indian Ocean is owned by the British!
@ArishMell I am letting you know that I was there and there were not any natives in residence…zero. P

@Aliveshock On that particular island? What of the rest? Was the island inhabited before the base was built, and if not now, why not?

From today's PA report sumarised in my local paper the UK government does not want the base to close but is prepared to hand the island back to Mauritius (and should under international law) but along with the US, lease the base from that country.

I don't know if the land is already under lease but that would at least give Mauritius an income from it, and would be right morally.

Don't give the Chinese any more ideas. They already mess with sovereign countries in the West Philippine Sea.
