I would definitely suggest driving to the North shore and getting shave ice at Matsumoto's.
Kapalua Beach is a nice spot to snorkel with sea turtles but there's others. I think the fire will educate that decision.I don't know what Kapalua is like now. Haleakala, which is at about 10,000 feet, is worth the drive. Really cool. And the road to Hana is eye candy.
But overall, my experience is if you just drive around the island, be SUPER respectful and cool with the locals, you can find yourself in some really awesome areas.I think Kauai is a little more open with visitors but I've had some great experiences on Maui. But it really is all about respect. If people act like entitled tourists then they get treated that way. But if not, locals can be super inviting and warm. Oh... DON'T buy any weed from the dudes on the side of the road don't leave anything in your rental car. :)
Have fun. Getting off the plane and smelling that tropical air is pretty special.

@Coffeequilt Right on. It's a thrill. Can't touch them but you can absolutely snorkel around them. Big, beautiful and graceful. It'll blow your mind. :)

We went to Matsumoto's on our honeymoon in 1990 or thereabouts. I still have the highly- prized baseball cap. ;)
And from a cruise out of Houston: "NASA: It's not rocket science."
"Oh, wait. Yes it is."
Funny, but comparing these days with me growing up with Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, I do sometimes wonder. 🤔
