It would be interesting to know what, if anything, really happened since the ancient Hebrew books were not necessarily written with historical truth in mind. They were part of welding a disparate bunch of tribes with mainly Persian roots and religions, into a new, cohesive society.
Also the "Red" Sea made be a mis-interpretation by Mediaeval European editors : "REDE" (Reed) being more likely, and perhaps the marshes between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
That area has long had its indigenous Arab inhabitants - their life described by Gavin Maxwell in his book A Reed Blown In The Wind - but I don't know if this is still so, since Saddam Hussein tried to drain the marshes.
The Red Sea is very deep so could not have been crossed anywhere except perhaps on shallow beaches at its Northern end, though those might have areas that can trap the unwary.
