Lucky person, whoever owns that bit of sea. I hope something like that happens to me oneday.

The silver and gold was mined in Potosí, Bolivia, using slave indigenous labor.
I think their descendants should sue for the entire treasure.
A treasure hunting company claims it found it in 1981 and provided coordinates to the Colombian government. The company is suing the Colombian government for half the treasure, and the arbitration case is currently being heard in London.

@Northwest likely to go with the country where it was found.
Unfortunately international law gives "salvage" rights to the country where the country has defined it's water borders. It doesn't matter who found it either as long as it's within the countries predefined water borders.
It's sort of like USA laws apply within our hundred mile limit. But not past that limit.

Columbia would get the major share of that, if it's in their waters. Just because of the historical significance.
If you want to go treasure hunting, do so in international waters.

@DeWayfarer for me personally the thrill of the discovery is worth more to me than the 💲

I would absolutely love to dive on a ship like that. I don't need all the treasure. Just a sword and a little bit of gold is fine. I am not greedy. 🙂
So you say there is over 500000 pounds of gold on that ship? I think not.
