It is a beautiful picture of a very spectacular structure!
I think Microsoft used it a while ago as one of their logging-on pictures, but did not tell us where it is, so thank-you for the information.
I don't know the area's geology but the peak in the middle looks as if an eroded volcanic plug; which would also account for the extremely steep slope.
