Initially Naturism was a more philosophical approach to nature and the outdoors which embraced the concept of being nude in public places. Some of the earliest naturist groups has cery strict codes of behavior and included no smoking or drinking.
Nudism was a more relaxed practice of being nude with others in public places (not necessarily outdoors and not having any specific codes of behavior).
Naturist groups have a more relaxed outlook these days, so there's not much difference between the two now....and they are often used interchangeably. Another reason for this was that Naturists were often confusex with Naturalists (who were into nature, but not necessarily into being nude in public).
I sometimes refer to myself as a Nudist, and I'm a member of The Naturist Society.
