Have you ever tried to reason and explain to a child in a tantrum. Or to a hormone-infused adolescent!!! I agree, when reason and explanation is possible, it is the right course. But there are times when a sore behind really is the best argument

Yes. It works, because they are mature enough to understand that it does not benefit anybody if they tantrum because they will not get what they want from the tantrum. I get that discipline can come in the form of spanking, but I do not think that forgetting to TEACH them the right thing before spanking them is a good idea.

@Pirate: Children are individules and it's not a matter that spankings work better or worse then reasoning and explanations or any of the available ootions .. .. .. it is what works for this individual in this situation .. .. ..
In all the spankings or any other descipline I have given an explination of why/how it was earned and the reasons the actions were undesirable were always included .. .. ..
