More Prison Spanking
In my previous article I wrote about how inmates of Upstate New York prisons were literally spanked for breaking the rules. I have found some more instances of spanking in prison settings that were well-documented if not little-known.
During the American Civil War, Andersonville Prison in Georgia was notorious for its brutality toward Union prisoners of war, so much so that after the war its commander, Henry Wirz, was hanged for war crimes. Conditions were deplorable, and many desperate men were driven to theft.
The commander had a special punishment reserved for thieves--a public spanking. In his book on Andersonville, historian McKinlay Cantor describes the procedure and points out that those who watched it had a general air of merriment. In fact, everyone was laughing except for the poor guy getting spanked!
The culprit was taken to a clearing and the entire camp was assembled to watch. He had his pants taken down and then he was required to bend way over and grip his ankles. The spanking was applied with a long plank known as a "shake," a paddle-like board that was used primarily for roofing. The administrator of the punishment gripped the board with both hands and delivered up to twenty tremendous whacks to the bare bottom of the prisoner while the entire camp laughed at him. The ordeal was terrible and left the thief unable to sit down for a long time, at least a week according to contemporary accounts. Added to his great pain was the ignominy of having his bare heinie spanked like a naughty boy!
The prospect of the spanking struck fear into the hearts of those who witnessed it, and caused any would-be thieves to think twice before taking things that didn't belong to them!
Okay, fellas--now we're going to spank the girls.
In the notorious Bridewell Prison in London, thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes were confined, many under sentence of a flogging. This was a golden opportunity for some entertainment.
In the 18th and early 19th Centuries the well-to-do found diversion in organizing "Flogging Parties" to visit Bridewell on the day the whores were to be spanked. From the time of Shakespeare, prostitutes were given the expected punishment of a whipping for plying their questionable trade. They were usually flogged on the bare back, but the younger girls were birched on the bottom to make things interesting.
A special whipping bench was placed in the center of a large underground hall. This bench was equipped with stocks at either end. One held the girl's neck and wrists, the other set of stocks clamped her ankles. The ladies and gentlemen of society were ushered in to watch the procedure, and they gathered around the bench at a safe distance so that the prison matrons could do their job accurately. Women were employed to do the whipping of the girls, and sometimes even of the men. The condemned girl was brought in and stretched out along the bench, and her head and feet confined in the stocks. Her skirts were raised up to her shoulders, revealing her bare buttocks. Back then women did not wear drawers or bloomers, but shielded their modesty with heavy petticoats. Rods made of bundled birch twigs, which had been soaked in a mixture of salt and vinegar, were placed in a large basket. There were several birches kept handy, because the spanking was so long and vigorous that several birches were usually broken over the girl's behind. There is an illustration from the novel Nell In Bridewell by W. Reinhard, which shows a girl undergoing such a spanking. Heavy-set prison matrons, seen rolling up their sleeves and selecting a good birch rod, proceed with the punishment. The illustration shows the girl in the process of the spanking, and we can see a pool of blood collecting on the wood floor under the bench. The society people, dressed in their best, watch the spanking with glee. It is said that the screams of these poor girls could be heard all over the prison, as the birches slice into their butts and the vinegar and salt sear into the spank spot. It burns, of course, but it is also a rudimentary antiseptic that prevents infection. When the girls were finally released from prison, chances were they thought twice about continuing their dubious careers as ladies of the night.


Prison spanking still continues in the form of caning in Malaysia, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. In the American South, the notorious prison strap has been abolished after investigations brought the practice into he public eye.
