Partly it was just my perception as being spanked by one of my step-aunts was just shocking in general as they often spanked differently than my stepmother.
For instance my Aunt L once watched me get a spanking and later said something about how I was "lucky" I only got the spoon and not the big bath brush she used on her children.
When the time came (I was 12) that Aunt L got permission to spank me (long story but I did deserve a spanking) she seemed pleased to tell me, "Now you will see what it's like to get a REAL paddling with the big brush..." and she made sure I was howling by the end.
Things like that and how they often spanked me in front of my cousins....😞
