Partly it was just my perception as being spanked by one of my step-aunts was just shocking in general as they often spanked differently than my stepmother.
For instance my Aunt L once watched me get a spanking and later said something about how I was "lucky" I only got the spoon and not the big bath brush she used on her children.

I've been spanked by my aunt and uncle as well as my husband's aunts and uncles. There wasn't much to choose between them, they all stung.
