How does an open relationship work ?

I haven't known anyone who claims (or demonstrates) they are in an open relationship. I know about threesomes, etc. but open relationships are clearly something different.

I've met couples who have had open relationships, but the only one I have been in was with a girlfriend.

@novaguy2u I view open relationships as ones where the commitment to one another is not resolute and both parties have chosen to permanently 'hedge their bets'.
