How does an open relationship work ?

I haven't known anyone who claims (or demonstrates) they are in an open relationship. I know about threesomes, etc. but open relationships are clearly something different.

I think that’s where only one is in love and willing to be the used, on the side back up plan just to keep the one they love in their life.
