My Second Last Day at School

I was caned on my second last day at school. Five of the best. It would have been six, except it was my birthday. The headmistress - a lady I had known as a family friend for years - let me off the final stroke as a birthday present.
"Happy birthday" she said, as I wriggled and rubbed in front of her.
Two days later, she was a guest at my 18th birthday party, all smiles and friendship.

Public schools in England were bizarre, too: at my school they would tie us the gym vaulting horse before administering "corrective" punishment.

@CharlesRomsey Bizarre indeed! I did not know schools could do that.

@HarrietteSpeedy : They could in the '60's: the Jesuits excelled at it.

@CharlesRomsey Ah! I see. I was never at a public school. Mine was just ordinary!

@HarrietteSpeedy I was a "scholarship boy", where the fees were paid by the charity. I was a lower-class "oik"

@CharlesRomsey You commoner, you! Little oik! I don't think I should even lower myself to respond to a common, working class person! I bet you even buy off-the-peg clothes and don't have caviar for breakfast more than twice a week!

@CharlesRomsey I am sure they enjoyed it.
@HarrietteSpeedy Typical English understatement.

@HarrietteSpeedy I was a scholarship boy: my Dad was a postman and Mum a tea lady.
