My Second Last Day at School

I was caned on my second last day at school. Five of the best. It would have been six, except it was my birthday. The headmistress - a lady I had known as a family friend for years - let me off the final stroke as a birthday present.
"Happy birthday" she said, as I wriggled and rubbed in front of her.
Two days later, she was a guest at my 18th birthday party, all smiles and friendship.

Probably the best birthday present that year, because she behaved as though it had never happened in front of your parents !

@emmasfriend She was a decent woman. I liked her a lot.
Being unable to leave the position you assumed over the vaulting horse prevented you from earning extra strokes. Perhaps not needed for you but many students earned those dreaded additions to their sentence for jumping up or reaching around. So, a modest benefit from the restraint.

@Alfred22 Oh, interesting, was Harriett swished over a vaulting horse? She's away at present from SW.

What had you done to merit a caning...? 🤔

@Wol62

You always do. 😂

@Thinkerbell You mean I am not the brightest?

@Wol62

Some things are best left unsaid... 🤫

The caning can hardly have been designed to improve your behaviour, since you had only one day left in school. Pour encourager les autres, I suppose.

Public schools in England were bizarre, too: at my school they would tie us the gym vaulting horse before administering "corrective" punishment.

@CharlesRomsey I am sure they enjoyed it.
@HarrietteSpeedy Typical English understatement.

@HarrietteSpeedy I was a scholarship boy: my Dad was a postman and Mum a tea lady.

What a beautiful story! The good old/bad old days. I fully approve, though.

Lucky you.
