Oh no, real conservatives aren't fans of destruction

When staying with friends in California I asked if we could visit the Nixon and Reagan libraries. This is how much I am of a rightwinger in politics. My friends obliged me very kindly with the one library. They're your typical Californian liberals but we've always been friends nevertheless.

Now, as a non-American, my heart bleeds. Not only because of the vile posting by President Trump on Rob and Michele Reiner's death, but also because all the traditions and history that's being destroyed by this current incumbent of the White House.

What next? Turning the West Wing into Trump Plaza? No, Mister President, Ronald Reagan wasn't a fan and would never have been a fan of yours. Notice the grin, that's for sure not a smile. Anyhow, one year gone and this presidency is already becoming a lame duck one!

@val70 So no names, just an opinion of yours, eh
val70 · 51-55
@sunsporter1649 You must be kidding. I remember them all from the 80s onwards
@sunsporter1649 Here are a few:
George W. Bush, Jeb Bush, David Frum, Ross Douthat, William Kristol, Liz Cheney.

Oh, and let's not forget tRump's former cabinet members!

Richard Spencer, Secretary of the Navy
“The president has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military, to fight ethically or to be governed by a uniform set of rules and practices.” — Nov. 27, 2019

H.R. McMaster,White House national security adviser
“President Trump and other officials have repeatedly compromised our principles in pursuit of partisan advantage and personal gain.” — Jan. 7, 2021

James Mattis, Secretary of Defense
“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society.” — June 3, 2020

Mark Esper, Secretary of Defense
“I have a lot of concerns about Donald Trump. I have said that he’s a threat to democracy. I think the last year, certainly the last few months of Donald Trump’s presidency, will look like the first few months of the next one if that were to occur.” — Oct. 1, 2023

Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State
“M0ron” — July 20, 2017

William Barr, Attorney general
“The fact of the matter is he is a consummate narcissist and he constantly engages in reckless conduct that puts his political followers at risk and the conservative and Republican agenda at risk. … He will always put his own interest and gratifying his own ego ahead of everything else, including the country’s interest. There’s no question about it. … He’s like a 9-year-old, a defiant 9-year-old kid, who’s always pushing the glass toward the edge of the table defying his parents to stop him from doing it.” — June 18, 2023

John Bolton, White House national security adviser
“By the time I left the White House, I was convinced he was not fit to be president. … I think it is a danger for the United States if he gets a second term.” — June 22, 2023

John Kelly, White House chief of staff from July 28, 2017, to Jan 2, 2019, and secretary of Homeland Security from Jan. 20, 2017, to July 31, 2017. He is a retired four-star Marine Corps general who was hired to bring order to the White House.
“What can I add that has not already been said? A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them.’ A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family – for all Gold Star families – on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France."

"A person who is not truthful regarding his position on the protection of unborn life, on women, on minorities, on evangelical Christians, on Jews, on working men and women. A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason – in expectation that someone will take action. A person who admires autocrats and murderous dictators. A person that has nothing but contempt for our democratic institutions, our Constitution, and the rule of law."

“There is nothing more that can be said,” Kelly concluded. “God help us.” — Mon October 2, 2023

@ElwoodBlues Strange how all those comments were made during the previous demonocrat administrations about the current President and were fired due to abject incompentence or direct disobiedence of the current Presidents orders and policies. Just a remarkable coincidence, eh?
val70 · 51-55
@sunsporter1649 You mean that the current WH Chief of Staff, Secretary of War (sic), US Attorney General et al. should be fired on your said criteria then too? Never seen more abject imcompentency in a first year
@sunsporter1649 Far from it, sunstroke!! tRump announced they were "the best of the best" when he hired them. And he thanked them for their service when they left.

The real problem with these men was that they were more loyal to the Constitution than to tRump. SAD!!

@ElwoodBlues Navy Secretary Richard Spencer was fired Sunday by Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who ordered that a Navy SEAL who was acquitted of murder be allowed to remain in the elite commando corps, the Defense Department said.

Esper asked for Spencer's resignation after President Donald Trump tweeted Thursday that Chief Petty Officer Eddie Gallagher would retain the gold Trident insignia signifying his status as a member of the Sea, Air, and Land Teams, or SEALs. Spencer told reporters Friday that he believed the review process over Gallagher's status should go forward.

In a letter to Trump, Spencer said he acknowledged his "termination," saying the president deserved a Navy secretary "who is aligned with his vision."

"Unfortunately, it has become apparent that in this respect, I no longer share the same understanding with the Commander in Chief who appointed me," Spencer wrote.

"In regards to the key principle of good order and discipline, I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Shortly thereafter, Trump tweeted that he was displeased not only by the way that "Gallagher's trial was handled by the Navy" but also because "large cost overruns from [the] past administration's contracting procedures were not addressed to my satisfaction."

"Therefore, Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer's services have been terminated by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper," he wrote. He said he would nominate retired Adm. Kenneth Braithwaite, the U.S. ambassador to Norway, to succeed Spencer.
@sunsporter1649 Yep, tRump fired Spencer because Spencer was more loyal to the Constitution than to tRump. SAD!!

In an interview with CBS news after being fired Monday evening, Spencer said Trump’s insistence on maintaining Gallagher’s rank as a Navy SEAL tells troops that they “can get away with it,” if they commit a crime. “We have to have good order and discipline, it’s the backbone of what we do,” he said.

... Spencer added be believes Trump doesn’t fully understand the definition of a war fighter. “A war fighter is a profession of arms,” Spencer told CBS’s David Martin outside the Pentagon. “And a profession of arms has standards.”
