A few years back, I read about a group at a Japanese university that had developed a prosthetic tail to help elderly people deal with balance issues (another aspect of difficulty in walking). Given that the only bipedal animals of comparable size to humans- ostriches and the larger kangaroos- both have rather prominent tails, it seems quite the ovesight that we lack them, but you need to remember the purpose of natural selection; we already get quite the reprieve from the usual "make babies and get out of Dodge" routine that most lifeforms have to deal with.
But that's not good enough for Japan, which listens to Mother Nature give her monologue about the futility of human effort; how we're all doomed to grow weak and helpless and see the collapse of freedom and dignity, and its frown deepens until it turns into a scowl, then turns to the guy next to it, mutters "Hold my sake" and goes and invents an artificial tail.
It's hard not to love those guys sometimes.
However, losing 50% of your leg strength from pushing yourself up with your hands would require you not using your legs for anything else (or to be in space, I suppose)- standing up from a seated position isn't just straightening your legs, it's pushing your entire body vertically upwards; far more a matter of lower abdominal muscles than leg ones, which would be exercised by simply walking.
Good on you for keeping your body in working order, but let's not lose perspective here.

@Rabscuttle Ten years ago a Japanese scientist (forget his name ) was awarded the Nobel prize in medecine for discovering autophagy . It’s odd how we never heard of this. All I can conclude is our govt wants us sick so we die long before collecting govt benefits.

@AthrillatheHunt I hear ya brother. This is why we have not cured cancer. Can you imagine the
fallout of a cancer cure?

I have had problems with the medical system prescribing more insulin rather that reverse insulin resistance. The VA pharmacists need knowledge in what they prescribe.
DogMan · 61-69, M
@Pfuzylogic Do you have type 2? A few years back Doc told me I was pre-diabetic. I increased my
cardio work outs and lost a few pounds, I have never been too over weight, I know it can be harder
for some people.

@DogMan I tested for pre-diabetes when I was 50 but not given any advice. I have type 2 now and the main practice of the pharmacists is to continually increase the dose of Insulin. I had increases of BS level from evening to morning and the pharmacists could give me no insight on what was going on or insight on how to increase my HDL.

💯 skip the escalators and climb the stairs...and yep, walk, hike and run if you knees let you. There's a book called "Younger Next Year" it's pretty good...

I refuse to become an old guy who can barely get around.
I still work 4 days a week, retured, and only on ONE medication.
I will NEVER move into a assisted living center.

@Midlifemale Thats great, keep up the good work. Our bodies were made to move and work.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@DogMan our bodies were designed for long distance predation. That’s how we developed sweat glands

Use it, or lose it.
