Why Black WWII vets did not take advantage of the GI Bill

I watched a program about Black veterans that were denied the GI Bill. My dad served with black
soldiers in WWII and he said they were great warriors. I decided to look into this.

Democrat John Rankin's name kept coming up.

In August 1944, just two months after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemenโ€™s Readjustment Act (a.k.a. the GI Bill of Rights), Harry McAlpin, Washington correspondent for the National Negro Publishers Association, warned that the new law, though race-neutral on its face, would exclude Black veterans. The GI Bill included funding for housing, college, and job training, along with business loans and unemployment insurance, which fueled social mobility for millions of veterans and their descendants. It also included โ€œinnumerable loopholes for states to โ€˜robโ€™ returning Negro veterans of the rights and privileges they have earned by risking their lives and limbs for the preservation (?) of democracy,โ€ McAlpin wrote.

This discrimination was by design. Southern Democrats including House Veterans Committee Chairman John Rankinโ€”who a quarter century earlier had penned an editorial ridiculing the notion that military service might somehow elevate a Black man to become the โ€œpeer of the white manโ€โ€”took pains to ensure that the billโ€™s benefits would be administered at the state level, where white officials served as gatekeepers.

Wow ! Information I didn't know. My dad served in WWll, and bought a new house under the GI Bill and got his college paid for. He had many friends from the war that were introduced to his 6 children ad aunts & uncles...great people.
They rarely talked about the war...it was rough and hard for 4 years with those families.
So many people don't understand what it was like when most ALL men were drafted and had to serve....the cost of freedom. And I missed the draft by one number or I would have gone to Vietnam.
So don't wonder why we are against open borders...when those immigrants did nothing to gain the freedom that the American people have...and we gladly pay our taxes to thank our government for that protection and freedom.

@Carla The Democrats never changed, they pushed racism in discrete ways. Like putting all
the new abortion clinics in black neighborhoods.

Democrats today wouldn't be putting up with anything from anyone once the hammer and sickle went up the pole. You'd better be useful to them in some way.
