Canada Did Not Push the Smoke Button
like clockwork, the comments start rolling in
“Canada, can you stop sending your smoke down here?”
“Canada is ruining our summer!”
First of all… if anyone finds the Canadian “send smoke south” button, please let us know, because we’d really like to turn that thing off. Trust me, nobody up here ordered this smoky mess either.
Canada does not have a giant smoke cannon pointed at the United States. The forests are not sitting there saying, “Hey, let’s ruin someone’s beach day.” Wildfires don’t check the calendar, look at the weather forecast, and decide who deserves a nice summer.
The smoke is moving because that’s what smoke does. Wind doesn’t stop at the border, wave a passport around, and ask permission before crossing.
And before anyone forgets America has wildfires too. Big ones. Devastating ones. This isn’t a “Canada problem” or an “America problem.” It’s a wildfire problem. Today the smoke might be drifting south, another day it could be heading north. Mother Nature clearly didn’t get the memo about respecting borders.
Maybe instead of blaming each other, we remember that we’re neighbours. Good neighbours don’t complain about the smoke coming over the fence while the other neighbour’s house is on fire. They grab a hose, lend a hand, and check if everyone is okay.
Because behind the smoky skies are real people. Thousands of people have lost their homes, communities have been evacuated, firefighters are putting their lives on the line, and families are trying to rebuild what they lost. This isn’t just an inconvenience for many it’s life changing.
Yes, we all miss sunny days, backyard BBQs, camping trips, and breathing air that doesn’t smell like a campfire. Canadians are not sitting around enjoying the smoke like some kind of summer air freshener.
