Trump Links Greenland Threats to Missing Out on Nobel Prize

From the Wall Street Journal
Jan-19-2026

President Trump added a new dimension into his increasingly aggressive pursuit of Greenland, telling Norway that he no longer needed to think “purely of peace” after being snubbed for the Nobel Peace Prize.

European leaders were already scrambling to talk him out of a damaging trans-Atlantic trade war over the island, in which he launched an opening salvo over the weekend.

So far, the European Union and the U.K. have held off openly wielding retaliatory tariffs in response to Trump’s threat to hit them with 10% tariffs for their opposition to a U.S. takeover of Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory.

European leaders are looking to take the heat out of the rapidly escalating issue, in hope that Trump won’t follow through with his pledge.

But the president threw another curveball into the debate on Sunday, linking his pursuit of the world’s largest island to missing out on the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded by a committee based in Norway.

According to the Norwegian prime minister, Trump said in a text message that the world wouldn’t be secure unless the U.S. has “Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”

“Considering your country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS,” Trump wrote in the message, according to Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, “I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”

Trump has given a number of reasons why he wants the mineral-rich, strategically located island to become part of the U.S., but this is the first time he is known to have attributed his pursuit to missing out on a Nobel.

The president has long made clear his ambition to win the coveted award, which the Nobel committee gave to former President Barack Obama in his first term. Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, the most recent Nobel Peace laureate, presented Trump with her medal last week when the pair met at the White House.

On Monday, Støre said he had responded to the message from Trump. “We pointed to the need to de-escalate,” he said in a statement, adding that he had told Trump repeatedly that the Norwegian government has no say in who gets the peace prize.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

At this point in life, he is fueled by hatred, vengeance/retribution and transactions. The latter has been a constant theme throughout his business career, and the first 2 have become dominant over time. Especially now that in one public appearance after another, it's obvious to almost anyone (at least those actually paying attention) that his mental illness and psychoses are becoming worse. Much worse.
I know and love many people who voted for him three (yes, *three*) times and not a single one wants to face this fact, plus the realization they support the greatest grifter (and grifter fam) in American history. This ain't TDS, snowflake liberal tears, deep state BS or whatever else, it's the truth. And the truth hurts.

Although this is an administration with *zero* strategic long-term planning on annnnnnything (in true trumpian fashion) there is definitely a plan to cancel the midterms. He wants to remain in power indefinitely, believing nobody can stop him (like his Russian counterpart). So far, this has proved true. All the supposed safeguards America has put in place to prevent an autocracy have proven to be worth sh*t. Only SCOTUS stands in his way(ish). And oh yeah, his morality, according to that recent WSJ interview 😂😂😂😂

If he invokes the Insurrection Act in MN, that will be crossing the Rubicon. Yet will enough of his MAGA party (there is no GOP anymore) congresspeople finally grow a spine and move to enact the 25th Amendment? To use the catch phrase he uses daily: We'll see what happens!

I want to think this, the taking it by any means statement, is just bluster.
But, i may be mistaken.
I think he will do most anything to cancel the midterms. He loses then, and he can't stop what comes next for him.
I think war in our streets gets him more support.

When I posted about Trump not wanting to put Machado in charge of Venezuela because she won the Nobel Peace Prize, I was accused of Trump derangement syndrome.

One thing about Trump is that he consistently lives up to satire.
@Burnley123 "Trump Delusional Syndrome" continues to be a thing, however. 😉

@bijouxbroussard The most simple and most accurate explanation for 'TDS' is that Donald Trump is very bad. He does a lot of very bad things and people say so

The Nobel prize is possibly a minor factor. Not the primary factor. He wants Greenland for the rare Earth's. Just like with Venezuela, the ruse was drugs, not oil.

Everything Trump wants has to do with profits. It doesn't matter if it will bring in those profits or not though. He still thinks it will.

Panama, shipping profits.
Canada, energy profits.
The Gaza strip, casino profits.
Venezuela, oil profits
Greenland, rare earth profits.
Ukraine, mineral profits.

The commonality is "profits".

He is such a baby! He didn't get the peace prize so now he is not going to hide his bulliness and threaten everyone.

A couple more silly things about this. Why would he lash out at Denmark because he was butt hurt by Norway. Secondly , the government of Norway doesn't make the Nobel decisions. This is a president that does even know how things work
Softy1 · M
@Northwest as you guys put more details the more apparent he knows nothing about things work.

@Northwest I saw Trump on the news this morning. He said he didn't believe the Norwegian government didn't control the Peace Prize. I guess he just assumes every country is just as corrupt as he is.
@JimboSaturn He does assume that. It’s why he makes inappropriate offers like when he tried to blackmail President Zelenskyy about getting information on Hunter Biden, or losing US support (Zelenskyy didn’t take the bait).

I still think the Nobel Prize is a joke, but... duh?

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Probably because they were as speechless as the rest of us.
Threatening the world because he didn't get the toy he wanted.

@robingoodfellow MAGA (the former Republican Party) supporters have sold their integrity and honour to this weak, frightened, old man.

It's astounding!
