Mississippi has declared a health emergency as the number of infant deaths after birth has skyrocketed to the worst in the country.

Mississippi has reached a rate of 9.7 deaths per 100,000 birth rates. This is three times the rates of North Dakota, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, or New Hampshire.

The 49th state, Arkansas, is one full percentage point lower.
