Trigger warnings

I watched a program about people that write the trigger warnings. They say it is compassionate.

But is it really? Sure, a war veteran with PTSD might not like loud bangs, but do we
need to protect every young person, from everything? Are we protecting them from
minor things that just upset them? I know that MAGA signs are not allowed on
many campuses because it upsets the weak and timid.

I have read that exposing people to the things that bother them, helps them to get post
those things.

Does it cause you any harm or inconvenience to have those warnings? It is about empathy and making incremental adjustments to make the public sphere welcome (or at least less intimidating) to all.

Do you actually know why those signs were banned? Possibly because college campuses are places of learning, not political theatres.

@SunshineGirl Oh really, then why were the protests allowed on campus?

@Adrift i will bet a dollar that expressing personal beliefs are not disallowed. Red hats. T shirts. Tats. Personal.
Freedom of assembly and speech. It's a thing.

@SunshineGirl Nothing is wrong with asking people to be empathic Sunshine. It's when it is "Forced" under penalty
of law, cancellation, or some other form of punishment, that I draw the line.

Free speech means just that. Young people need to toughen up. Do you know the old poem called "Sticks and Stones"?
Maybe these young folks should look for some type of tough mind training. There are a lot of books out there.
Or if they are 18 and above, they could do a stint in the military. It didn't bother me to be screamed at and demeaned.
I have always had a positive attitude, and I make that shit roll right off, like all people should be able to do.

If you can't do that, you have a little problem, that you should address. It can be a mean world out there, be stronger.

I'm not sure what sign you are talking about. Is the Anti-Semetic sign calling for the extermination of the Jews?

You know, Antifata, River to the sea shit? I don't like it, but that is the right of idiots.

@DogMan Your original post is about "trigger warnings". Information that broadcasters, entertainers, public institutions, etc, voluntarily provide in the hope that their product may be accessed by as wide a section of the population as posdible. Nothing to do with law, punishment, or "cancellation".

I am talking about the "MAGA signs" you mentioned in your original post. Not everything is political. Young people should have a reasonable expectation that they can enjoy their (very expensive) educations in peace without being exposed to irrelevant politicking.

@SunshineGirl So you must be pretty pissed off at all the anti-Jew protests at universities keeping kids from their education.

Do you really think there are MAGA people keeping people from their education? Or are you agreeing with me that
kids are too weak? Do you get depressed, and anxiety ridden if you see a MAGA sign? These kids have
mental problems that need to be addressed. Trying to protect them from triggers, does not help the underlying
problem.

@DogMan I get depressed when everything is interpreted in partisan, political terms. Most students are barely out of childhood. College should be one of the best and most enriching experiences of their lives. Leave the kids free to do what they want. They have 60+ years of this dreary nonsense to look forward to when they leave college.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@SunshineGirl College is supposed to be about continuing education so you can get a better job.
All that chaos was interfering with other people’s rights.
Alot of students working their way through college.
Do you not think that they were triggered when they couldn't focus on their finals?
DogMan · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl What are you talking about Sunshine??? College kids get to do whatever they want.

Are you saying partisan political types should not use them for Protests and riots? and taking over
buildings on campus? Well, I guess we agree, because none of that stuff is being done by the right.
